Bucket Sets for Coon

I put out two bucket sets for coon. The bucket on the left was baited with corn, cherry kool aid and had a dab of beaver castor tossed in as an attractor. The bucket on the right just had corn and kool aid in it.

I then placed a small dab of jack mackerel laced with liquid smoke in the leaves between the two buckets.

This video clearly shows that the fish was by far the preferred bait, with the beaver castor holding their interest next, while the bucket with the corn and kool aid completely failed to attract anything - even the possum.

This is a three minute lesson in how you need to test your baits for your area and at different times of the year. We've had a mild winter and food is plentiful. The coon were far more interested in fish than corn.

This also shows the importance of a game cam when testing. Without a camera, I would have thought that a possum had worked my set and gotten caught, leaving the corn untouched. I would have never known that I had coon crawling all over my sets - but refusing to enter a wide open bucket to get free corn.


I'm going to continue testing with different baits and will update this series from time to time. I'm probably going to pull the actual traps so I can continue to observe these coons and how they react to future baits.
